Reading American silver
American silver is marked by standard and maker, not by assay year. STERLING becomes common from the mid-19th century; earlier work is usually coin silver at roughly .900 and may carry no standard mark at all. Trove dates a piece from the maker’s mark, the pattern and the construction rather than from a mark that was never a date.
